GPS and Geotagging Overview

JetPhoto Studio enables users to review and browse photos with an enclosed map on which to show the locations where photos were taken. Besides directly pointing the photo on map to set the location manually, you can also try a very easy way to locate thousands of photos with GPS tracking automatically. JetPhoto adopts a patented method to match digital photos with time synchronized GPS track logs. The particular location of a longitude-latitude coordinate will be set for each photo automatically, and link all located photos on Google Earth and Google Map Gallery as well as the website with geotagging support, such as Flickr.

In JetPhoto, the photo location is expressed as a WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984) coordinate value, WGS84 coordinate system is also adopted by GPS (Global Positioning System). The latitude need to be a number within -90 to 90 degrees (a negative number is for South, and a positive number is for North). The longitude need to be a number within -180 to 180 degrees (a negative number is for West, and a positive number is for East). The elevation is an altitude number in meters (a negative number is for below sea level, and a positive number is for above sea level). JetPhoto Studio Users can directly see and edit the latitude, longitude and elevation values for a photo in its information list.

To obtain the benefit of automatic photo locating, you usually need one GPS receiver, and turn on its power during your travel. JetPhoto supports Garmin, Magellan and SONY GPS handholds, watches and loggers, also allows importing track logs from GPX, NMEA and OziExplorer files.

Quick start with GPS

Assumes you have already had a GPS logger that recorded the tracks when you was taking photos. Now you returned home, and imported all photos into an album in your JetPhoto Studio.

You can click button 'Locate Photo with GPS' or choose menu item 'GPS & Geotag'->'Locate Photo with GPS' to open a window that will help you to finish photo locating within three steps.

STEP 1. Connect GPS device to your computer, and download track logs to your computer.
(Or, use vendor's software bundled with your GPS device to download track logs into files in GPX, NMEA or OziExplorer format. After that, import these track log files into JetPhoto Studio.)



STEP 2. Click button 'Locate Photos!', matches photos with GPS tracks...
(There is a time zone option that must be set as same as the time zone of your camera clock.)



STEP 3. Wow! Now click button 'Go To Earth' to launch Google Earth on which links all located photos accurately.




Now photos are located, you can also click the buttons in this window to generate a Google Map gallery or Google Earth KML, KMZ files that include the located photos and even the relative tracks.



Locating photos with tracks

Track is a kind of GPS logs, it is a series of sequential time-location pairs.

Click button 'Locate Photo with GPS', or choose menu item 'GPS & Geotag' -> 'Locate Photo with GPS' to show a new window in which collects many photo locating features.

Import tracks
In box 'STEP1 - Download GPS Tracks', click button 'from GPS Receiver...' to show a dialog box, in which please choose GPS receiver type, connection port and select option 'Download Tracks'. Click button 'Import' to download all track logs from the connected GPS receiver.

Besides directly download tracks from GPS devices, you can click button 'from Files...' to get more importing options. JetPhoto Studio enables user to import GPS tracks from GPX, NMEA, OziExplorer, SONY GPS-CS1 log and Magellan SD files.

List tracks
All downloaded track logs are appended into GPS Log database in your JetPhoto Studio. So you can click link 'Show GPS Tracks' to list them in GPS Log Manager window. There, to correctly display time value in track list, please select the time zone as where the track was logged. Click the button with pencil icon to change the name of current selected track log. Click the button with (-) icon to delete current selected track log.

Match photos with tracks
In box 'STEP2- Locate Photos with GPS', select a time zone where photos were taken, and click button 'Locate Photos!'. JetPhoto Studio will add geographical location properties (longitude/latitude) for the photos that were tracked with GPS. JetPhoto Studio finds the track point with appropriate logging time that matches with the photo capture time. Each one of matched photos will have Longitude and Latitude properties. You can know them in photo infomation list with selecting Infomation extra panel, or review the photo location on map with selecting Map extra panel.



After changing Longitude, Latitude or Elevation property, you can also choose menu item 'EXIF Tools'-> 'Merge GPS Metadata into JPEG' to write location information into original JPEG files.

Time Calibration
Because the photographer who brings GPS receiver usually forgets to keep the time setting of camera as same as that of GPS receiver, the photo locating results are often inaccurate with time synchronized matching.

For the accurate matching, JetPhoto Studio already provides two methods to calibrate photo capture time. You could find two menu items in Calendar extra panel, click the Gear button to choose Time difference retrieve or Correct capture time.

Our experience is to take a picture for the GPS receiver monitor displaying a standard time*. By this standard time, it's easy to know the time offset between your GPS and your camera.



As above sample picture, the time offset is 23 seconds. User need to plus 23 seconds for each photo's capture time before matching photos with GPS tracks.



And then, with Capture Time Corrector, to correct the capture time for all photos in batch is also quite easy.

* GPS always gets standard time from GPS satellites, and GPS time is always accurate standard time. So, if your GPS unit doesn't have a monitor to display time, instead, you can just find the standard time on your computer (Both Mac OS X and Windows can set date & time automatically with time synchronizing service).



Locating photos on map

Even if you don't have GPS yet, you still can locate photos in a manual way.

Select a photo in Thumbnail view, and select 'Map' extra panel. If current photo is not located yet, please click button 'Point Photo Location on Map', and if current photo is already located, you can also click button 'Change Photo Location'.

Now, you can see a window with a embedded map view, in which points photo on map by the location where the photo was taken.



1. Search the map, enter a place name or a detailed street address to quickly locate this map to a specified place.

2. Hold mouse button and drag mouse to move the map, move the position where the photo was taken into the central target.

3. Click button 'Locate Photo!', JetPhoto Studio will add geographical location properties (longitude/latitude) for the photo according to the targeted location on current map.

4. Click left arrow or right arrow button to continue to locate more other photos in this album.

After changing Longitude, Latitude or Elevation property, you can also choose menu item 'EXIF Tools'-> 'Merge GPS Metadata into JPEG' to write location information into original JPEG files.



Google Earth and Google Maps

Besides review photo locations in Map extra panel in JetPhoto Studio, you can also link your photos ( and GPS tracks ) on Google Earth or Google Maps. Open 'Locate Photos with GPS' window, there are buttons 'Go To Earth...', 'Generate KML...', 'Generate KMZ...' and 'Generate Google Map Gallery...' in box 'STEP3 - Show Photos on Google Earth'.


Link photos on Google Earth

Click button 'Go To Earth' to launch Google Earth on which links all located photos instantly. Or, click button 'Generate KMZ' or 'Generate KML' to generate KMZ or KML file that can be opened with Google Earth. With the settings, you can decide to also show tracks on Google Earth.

KML - KML is a XML file that can be opened with Google Earth. JetPhoto Studio exports the location information of the photos (and track data) into a specified KML, this file will be saved on disk with the referenced album package together. KML file is only an index file, it doesn't contain any photo data yet. In this case, to share this KML file with others, you must copy both the KML file and the album package required.

KMZ - KMZ is a compressed package file that can be opened with Google Earth. JetPhoto Studio exports all location information of the photos (and track data) as well as all referenced photo files in one binary package. So, to share this KMZ package, just need to copy one file.


Make Google Map web gallery

Click button 'Generate Google Map Gallery' to make a dynamic web gallery to link located photos on Google Maps (Please refer to Making Google Map Gallery for more details).

GPS Log Manager

GPS Log Manager* is a special program to manage and preview your GPS tracks and waypoints. So you can download or import your GPS logs from your GPS device, and save them in the GPS log database. Also, you can export the archived GPS logs to GPX files again.

Click the Manage GPS Logs button in start window of JetPhoto Studio, or choose menu item 'GPS & Geotag' -> 'GPS Log Manager' to launch GPS Log Manager window.

* presently, GPS Log Manager and GPS log database are only available in JetPhoto Studio Windows version.




Tracks

Select Tracks tab page, here is a track list, and a time zone selector and a time filter is above the list. With selecting time zone, the track list will refresh the date & time displayed in Begin Time and End Time columns. Also, you can set the time filter to see a subset of track records that were recorded within a specific time range.

GPS Download - Click button 'GPS Download' to import tracks form GPS devices directly. The supported GPS devices are Garmin, Magellan etc.

Import File - Click button 'Import File' to import tracks from a selected file on disks. The supported file formats are GPX, NMEA, Ozi, Magellan SD etc.

Export File - Click button 'Export File' to export selected tracks into a GPX file. (GPX file can be opened with Google Earth)

Delete Tracks - Select the tracks that you want to delete in list, and click the button with (-) icon.

Modify Track Name - Select a track in list, and click the button with pencil icon. Type a new name in dialog box.

When you select a track in list, this track will preview in right map panel, and show a summary there, such as Distance, Time, Average Speed and Elevation (Unit can be set as Metric or English in Options window).

And then, you can click button 'Open with Google Earth' to view the selected tracks on Google Earth.


Waypoints

Select Waypoints tab page, here is a waypoint list.

GPS Download - Click button 'GPS Download' to import waypoints form GPS devices directly. The supported GPS devices are Garmin, Magellan etc.

Import File - Click button 'Import File' to import waypoints from a selected file on disks. The supported file formats are GPX, Ozi, Magellan SD etc.

Export File - Click button 'Export File' to export selected waypoints into a GPX file. (GPX file can be opened with Google Earth)

Delete Waypoints - Select the waypoints that you want to delete in list, and click the button with (-) icon.

Modify Waypoint Name - Select a waypoint in list, and click the button with pencil icon. Type a new name in dialog box.

Add Waypoint - click the button with (+) icon to add a waypoint with typing longitude, latitude, elevation and name manually.

When you select a waypoint in list, this waypoint will preview in right map panel. And then, you can click button 'Open with Google Earth' to view the selected waypoints on Google Earth. Click 'Edit Waypoint on Map' to change position for the selected waypoint or add a new waypoint on map.

All listed waypoints in GPS Log Manager will also appear in combo list 'Search the map' when you open window 'Point Photo Location on Map'.
